How AI is Shaping the Future of Security in Smart Places
As technology continues its rapid evolution, so too must the environments we manage. Whether it’s a bustling town centre, a business park, or an industrial estate, the task of maintaining security while ensuring smooth operations across diverse spaces is increasingly complex. At the forefront of this transformation is AI-enhanced security—a powerful solution that is revolutionizing how BIDs protect and manage their areas.
Traditional CCTV systems, while indispensable, present a significant challenge: the sheer volume of footage they generate. Sorting through hours of video in search of a specific moment can be a daunting task—one that consumes resources and precious time. This is where AI steps in, shifting the paradigm entirely.
During a recent upgrade at the West Chester Business Improvement District, we faced precisely this challenge. The installation involved 54 high-resolution CCTV cameras and three advanced ANPR systems, covering an 80-hectare area. While the scale was impressive, the key question remained: How do we make this vast network of surveillance both effective and manageable?
The answer lies in AI-driven technology. These systems don’t just record—they interpret. Every frame of video is transformed into searchable, indexed data. Instead of combing through endless hours of footage, security teams can instantly locate specific people, vehicles, or incidents, drastically reducing the time spent on investigations.
As Lee Donaghey, Managing Director at OneTek, who led the West Chester project, noted,
"The result is not only a cutting-edge security system, but also a tremendous source of reportable information. There has been a lot of interest in this project beyond West Chester BID. People are keen to see how we deploy these technologies to create a truly SMART place for West Chester and its businesses."
What sets AI apart is its ability to support without intruding. AI doesn’t replace your security teams; it enhances their ability to act swiftly and decisively. When incidents arise, this technology is already working in the background, analyzing data and flagging potential issues in real time. This kind of proactive surveillance allows teams to prevent problems before they escalate—shifting from reactive to preventive security.
Jordi J Morell, Chair of the West Chester BID Executive Board, emphasized the long-term impact of such a system:
"We now truly have a pioneering system that will benefit both the BID and its businesses for many years to come. The opportunities for engagement and understanding the capabilities of this technology are vast."
AI-enhanced CCTV doesn’t just offer security; it empowers managers to make data-driven decisions about how their spaces function. The integration of AI analytics allows for the collection of environmental data, such as vehicle emissions and traffic patterns—information that can help create a roadmap towards a greener future. It’s not just about protecting assets; it’s about building smarter, more sustainable spaces.
As demands on our spaces increase, now is the time to consider how AI can align with your broader strategy. From reducing operational costs to improving safety outcomes, the potential of AI extends beyond surveillance—it’s shaping the future of Smart Places.
AI-powered security isn’t just a trend; it’s a pivotal advancement that’s happening in forward-thinking spaces like West Chester BID today.
